Renato D'Aiello's Euro All-Stars

  • Renato D'AielIo ~ sax
  • Mark Bassey ~  trombone
  • Nicola Muresu ~ double bass
  • Andrea Marcelli ~ drums
  • Phil Lee ~ guitar

The line up has come together over the past year through a combination of old friendships and newly discovered partnerships. The band is now exploring the roots of jazz with a dynamic energy that is the synthesis of five world class and original musicians.

The quintet consists of the legendary Phil Lee on guitar, whose sensitivity and ability to support and interact with fellow musicians is widely recognised. The incomparable Nicola Muresu on bass is the real motor of the band with his indefatigable pulsing beat. The exceptionally gifted Andrea Marcelli on drums from Berlin is the latest arrival. The fabulous Mark Bassey is on trombone, and, together with Phil, is also responsible for the arrangements. At the core of the group is the extraordinary Renato D'Aiello. The intense warmth of his sound together with his amazing driving phrasing invokes the greatest tenor Titans. He has attracted such attention from critics, promoters, producers, radio DJs and jazz fans alike since his first appearance on the English jazz scene in 1999.

"The recent impact on the UK scene of two gifted saxophonists has made the familiar point that the jazz tradition can constantly be refreshed by players who sound as if they have only just discovered it - as long as those players have the right chemistry of imagination, dynamism and technique. Israeli composer/improviser Gilad Atzmon is one example of the species, as is the imperiously playful Italian Renato D'Aiello... " John Fordham - The Guardian Full review in The Guardian

"Renato is a superlative saxophonist with a passionate and poetic soul. He has all the virtues, a beautiful sense of time and pacing and a technique which effortlessly projects his brilliantly flowing ideas." Ian Carr - musician, jazz writer and biographer
