In December 2000, Ben formed the Quartet. It features the outstanding talent of Steve Waterman, a frequent playing partner, and one of the finest UK trumpeters, working with Carla Bley and John Surman, amongst others. He has appeared at Havana Jazz Festival, playing alongside Robin Eubanks. He leads his own group and has recorded two highly acclaimed albums on ASC Records. The band also showcases two exciting young musicians, Stuart McCallum, guitar and Dave Walsh, drums. Stuart and Dave, both Manchester-based players, are creating great interest by the creativity and maturity of their work. Stuart has already made an appearance at London's Jazz Café with his own band and Dave is one of the most sought-after sidemen in the North.
The band brings a contemporary approach to well chosen standards and plays originals by Steve and Ben. The music whether hot and fiery or cool and restrained benefits from Steve's technique: arguably up there with Marsalis
"Ben is, as well as being an excellent bass guitarist, an experienced and intelligent bandleader and composer, who produces characterful but unpretentious writing, with good part writing and, frequently, extremely strong melodies - always a bonus" John Etheridge, Musician
"His compositions are colourful, beguiling and thoroughly musical" Mark Gilbert, Jazz Journal International
