Pat McCarthy Quartet |
|
|
Pat is one of the leading jazz guitar players in the North and Midlands, his fluid melodic lines and finely honed sense of harmony have made him a popular choice as guest or sideman with many bands. Early inspiration came from listening to the recordings of Wes Montgomery, Barney Kessel and Django Reinhardt, and in a world of rapidly changing fashions and over-processed sounds, he remains a champion of the pure, classic jazz guitar sound. He has led the Pat McCarthy Quartet for ten years, and has played the guitar professionally for twenty years. Pat is Musician in Residence for Yorkshire Arts and is active in jazz education, having run many workshops and producing an improvisation video for children. He is also a composer and arranger, with commissioned works and music for television to his credit.
For this gig Pat has departed from his usual tenor sax fronted quartet and instead uses piano.
Jami Sheriff is one of the most gifted piano players to come out of the North of England in recent years. Although reminiscent in many ways of Keith Jarrett and Bill Evans, he is very clearly his own man. With a masterly control of time, and a strong sense of the melodic line, he holds the attention of the listener from the first note to the last. These qualities have not escaped the attention of some of the country's top players who have used him on many recordings and festival appearances, including Jim Mullen, Pete King and Tina May - to name but a few.
On double bass is Zoltan Dekany. Although a newish name on the Northern England jazz scene he's had more than 15 years of music performing experience throughout Europe and America, plus teaching in various institutes of music. A true virtoso on double bass and bass guitar he has performed with the Disney Theatre Orchestra and a host of artists such as Marianne McGovern and Jackie Scott. He is a Hungarian born American, and graduated from the California Institute of the Arts in 1995 where he studied with the legendary Charlie Haden who said of Zoltan "...outstanding skills...extraordinary talent!" He is currently teaching both electric and acoustic bass at Leeds College of music.
John Perry is one of those drummers who are held in high regard, not only by listeners, but also by his peers. He has an awesome technique, and a chameleon like ability to cross stylistic boundaries without ever losing his own unique sound. His solos are always musical and dynamic. Everyone wants him in their band: credits include Dave O'Higgins, Don Rendal, Ricky Woodard, Scott Hamilton, Nicki Isles, and Bobby Wellins
