Stan Tracey Quintet |
|
|
Stan Tracey is generally regarded as one of Britains greatest living jazz musicians. His career spans over 40 years, and goes back to the embryonic days of modern jazz in this country.
His rise to fame started in 1960 when he began a seven year stint as resident pianist at Ronnie Scott's Club. He played with all the great American musicians who appeared at the Club during that time including Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, Sonny Rollins, Dexter Gordon, Roland Kirk, Ben Webster, Stan Getz, Freddie Hubbard, and J J Johnson.
In his formative years, Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk were the biggest influences on Tracey's style but his distinctive and unique percussive chordal sound is now instantly recognisable as his own. His playing and composing have brought him international recognition and many honours including the OBE, honorary D.Lit, honorary member of the Royal Academy of Music, and Fellow of the Leeds College of Music. He is one of the handfull of British jazz musicians to have achieved real global fame and was voted International Jazz Musician of the Year in 1985.
For this concert he has his usual rhythm section plus Nigel Hitchcock on tenor and Mark Armstrong on trumpet - a top-notch lineup guaranteed to do full justice to Stan's impeccable material.
