Thom Whitworth has extensive experience on both guitar and trumpet performing at Alford, Grimsby and Cleethorpes Jazz Festivals with the Pat McCarthy Trio and Big Band.He has appeared live in concert with Jools Holland and performed live on his Radio 2 Show. He was a regional finalist in the Royal & Sun Alliance Young Jazz Musician of the Year 1999 and a semi-finalist in both 2000 and 2001 in the Perrier Young Jazz Musician Award.

Thom has appeared many times at other Hull venues and will appear three times at this year's Hull Jazz Festival. This visit to the GF is long overdue.

Pat McCarthy is one of the leading jazz guitar players in the North and Midlands, his fluid melodic lines and finely honed sense of harmony have made him a popular choice as guest or sideman with many bands. Early inspiration came from listening to the recordings of Wes Montgomery, Barney Kessel and Django Reinhardt, and in a world of rapidly changing fashions and over-processed sounds, he remains a champion of the pure, classic jazz guitar sound. He has played the guitar professionally for twenty years. Pat is Musician in Residence for Yorkshire Arts and is active in jazz education, having run many workshops and producing an improvisation video for children. He is also a composer and arranger, with commissioned works and music for television to his credit.

Thom and Pat are regular collaborators so look forward to some slick guitar duets and well-honed guitar backing to Thom's excellent trumpet playing

"Thom's trumpet playing covers a huge emotional and dynamic range, with a strong clear tone and a finely honed technique - reminiscent of a young Clifford Brown. He never fails to thrill an audience! He has already caught the attention of such media gurus as Jools Holland, who invited Thom to play in his quartet for a recent BCC radio broadcast. What most listeners to that concert would not have known, is that Thom is an equally accomplished guitar player. And if that were not enough, he recently produced/engineered and performed on his brothers' debut album - "These Four Walls." " Quote from Pat McCarthy - himself a highly rated guitarist. It takes one to know one!
