Reviews

"Matthew Bourne won the Young Jazz Musician Category of the Perrier Awards for 2001, and says that much of his time is spent forgetting how to play. Bourne's an intense and powerful performer, a breath of fresh air considering that youth jazz competitions often seem to inhibit running risks. His version of Stella By Starlight ... is unlikely to get played on many dinner-jazz shows. And his account of Annette Peacock's Kid Dynamite will make you jump out of your skin. But here's something that shows where Bourne has come from as well as where he's going - Ornette Coleman's Turnaround." John Fordham review of Matthew Bourne Trio CD

"...stood out by his virtuoso playing: a mix of energy, intelligence and sensibility. He also had a subtle sense of transitions, in the way the next sequence of notes could not be anticipated, and the space between them was so meticulously defined that it made the music compositionally sharp....The musical references to classical, classical-modern and jazz combined into a truly contemporary style of play, freely moving across styles and genres. Their influences include Count Basie, Shirley Bassey, Bill Evans, George Formby, Freddie Mercury, Thelonius Monk, John Cage and John Zorn." Gérard Mermoz reviewing a Coventry Jazz concert for BBC
