Wed 24 March | Bruce Adams |
|
|
Trumpet virtuoso Bruce Adamson, a compelling performer with an extrovert musical personality, has a phenomenal range and facility. Noted for his stratospheric renditions in the higher register, his high-octave playing has earned him an enviable reputation - Humphrey Lyttelton said that not only would he not play on the same stage as the Scottish trumpeter, he would not play in the same county! But Bruce doesn't want his pyrotechnic abilities to obscure his craft. "It's easy to be clever, to impress. What's difficult is to play beautifully, with feeling for the music", he says.
Recognised as among the UK's top players, he was voted 'best trumpet' in the British Jazz Awards 2001.
He will be guesting with the Martin Boyd Sextet, one of the most versatile bands in Northern England, which is dedicated to recreating the great jazz styles: Blue-Note, swing, dixieland, afro, latin, 'jazz age', jump-jive and be-bop.
"Bruce is a full throttle player, akin, say, to Charlie Shavers or Billy Butterfield - possessed of ample technique, considerable range, a big sound and spirit and guts aplenty. This top-grade trumpet action, in the grand manner, redolent of the great days of swing but with an updated, confident air. Adams shows impressive maturity - give him listening priority."- Peter Vacher, JAZZ CD
His playing echoes of great brassmen like Clark Terry, Sweets Edison and Dizzy Gillespie - a fiery, emotionally generous sound. - Martin Gayford, The Daily Telegraph.
