The Jamil Sheriff Octet is a young and dynamic ensemble of the highest standard. Members of the band have performed alongside internationally renowned artists such as Kenny Wheeler, Jim Mullen, Pete King, Ricky Woodard, Jackie Dankworth, Tina May, Dave Green, Dave Newton and just about every other 'name' on the British jazz scene. Jamil's style of writing draws from many genres. His style of composing is modern yet highly accessible. He puts a great emphasis on melodic content, creating some truly inspired pieces. Jamil gives the soloists within his ensemble the opportunity to play to the fullest of their capability over sequences that the audience can relate to. Many new works in the jazz idiom are highbrow, "music for musicians" but Jamil has a knack of writing from the heart and although at times he pushes the boundaries, this is done within the context of the music Hulljazz is very grateful to PRS Foundation for its support without which this project would be beyond our wildest dreams |
