Rod Mason's New Quartet |
|
The return of the Room Darkener!
Rod Mason is familiar to Hull jazzers as a member of bassist Ben Crosland's various bands, particularly the quintet with which he has played major festivals, mainland Europe, BBC radio and TV. His work with Ben has got him playing with many of the countries main jazz stars, including Alan Skidmore, Peter King, Don Weller, Art Themen, Guy Barker, Gerard Presencer, Steve Waterman, Jim Mullen and Mark Nightingale. He has also played with John Surman and John Warren in the Voice of the North Orchestra. Rod cites John Surman as an inspiration and main influence. His other influences are also contemporary e.g. Michael Brecker, Kenny Garrett, Jan Garbarek and another young Scandinavian called Lars Moller. Also influenced by guitarists, the main men being John McLaughlin, John Scofield and Bill Frisell.
The genial stage presence of this giant, extrovert multi-instrumentalist can sometimes conceal the fact that he is a very substantial player indeed. He brings his energy, passion and virtuosity to a diverse programme of heart-stopping ballads, funky fusion and fiercely wild tear-ups.
