Jazz at the Goodfellowship Inn ~ Hull

Players Session

Pictures by Guy Massey taken at a Players Session

Hull’s classiest sitters-in session.

Our guest is Mat Smith on tenor sax. He'll be presiding over the proceedings and fronting The Hulljazz House band . They're there to provide predictable quality for backing and stand-alone entertainment. You get to hear them for a fair bit of the evening.

Want to play? Individual participants, bands and listeners are welcome. All or any of the house band are yours if required. So - get practising your party piece.

Or take advantage of the bargain price and just listen.

25 years of Hulljazz

30-March 2008 is our 25th aniversary.

We're Hull's longest running jazz promotion. Our first session was on 30-March 1983 at the Piper Club when the featured band was the Eddie Thompson Trio.

At that time we were 'Jazz Workshop'. This was the name of our precursor which was a weekly sitting-in session where local dance-band and social club musicians with a penchant for jazz could indulge themselves free of commercial constraints. Coincidentally it was at the Goodfellowship Inn. This operation folded in 1982 and was resurrected as a promotion the following year when the then owner of the Piper Club invited us to move in.

Thus, our 'Players Sessions' have a direct line back to those 'Jazz Workshop' days and have always been an important part of our programming.
