Celebrity guitarist joins two of the North's finest.
John Etheridge made his name with the legendary and seminal jazz-rockers Soft Machine which he joined in 1975. International touring and recording followed until the bands demise at the end of the 70s. More or Less simultaneously (starting in 1976) Etheridge joined the touring group of the celebrated jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli. For a number of years these two commitments ran parallel - revealing the broad range of his abilities.
He left Grappellis quartet in 1981. Subsequently he has pursued a career involving associations with many of the great players of the jazz world. He has appeared with - Barney Kessel, Didier Lockwood, Nils Pedersen, Gordon Beck, Herb Ellis, Mundell Lowe, Dick Heckstall- Smith, Vic Juris, Miroslav Vitous, Biretli Lagrene, Dizzy Gillespie, Tony Williams, Yehudi Menuhin, Pat Metheny, Andy Summers, Nigel Kennedy.
Currently he fronts the hot-club inspired quartet Sweet Chorus, dedicated to Stephane Grappelli; 'Zappatistas', an 8 piece group which performs the music of Frank Zappa; and 'Soft machine Legacy'. And as a further indicater of his legendary eclectism, he performs with distinguished classical guitarist John Williams in recitals and recordings.
"With his distracted, Tommy Cooper-like cackle and air of embarrassed amateurism, John Etheridge likes to give the impression he has no idea what he's doing. But there's never a moment's doubt about his awesome authority whenever he touches a guitar." -John Fordham, The Guardian
